Slow Your Roll

Hello Again!

First, let me address the elephant in the room.  That elephant being my “I am going to blog everyday in June challenge”.  Let’s all take a moment to laugh at that because I maybe made 7ish blog posts.  However, all hope is not lost because this failed experiment helped me learn a lesson about goal setting.

Many of you are familiar with the Aesop fable “The Tortoise and the Hare” and the lesson slow and steady wins the race.  To sum up the fable the tortoise and the hare were in a race. The hare took off trying to show up the tortoise but eventually burned out and had to stop.   During the hare’s break the tortoise was able to pass the hare and win the race.

Now, I am sure you are probably thinking “what in the world does this story have to do with goal setting or your blog posts?”. Like the hare I set the intention of tackling this goal full blast and as a result I got burned out really quick.  I would dread having to post and felt like I couldn’t make any idea come together (I have like a gazillion unfinished drafts started).  I set the goal because I enjoyed blogging but wanted to become more consistent.   As a new blogger I should of started smaller with my goals and built up to daily posting because I ended up giving up all together.  Committing to posting once a week or bi-weekly would be been making progress towards my goals in a more manageable manner.

When goal setting it is important for us to meet ourselves where we are  and recognize that sometimes meeting a goal is a slow process.  This is extremely true when it comes to fitness goals.  We set a goal of wanting to loose weight or become healthier and we follow that with an overwhelming amount of life changes to make it happen.  We commit to cutting out foods that are bad for us and working out every day.  Then as a response to the demands we put on ourselves we start to loose motivation and we end up backsliding until we are right back to square one.  Remember this….A healthy lifestyle is a process….Reaching any goal is a process…and the process takes patience.

So the next time you feel discouraged with your journey to your goals take some time to reevaluate.  Break your goals down into manageable sections. Take it one step at a time and once you get comfortable start adding in other steps to reaching where you want to be.  Make promises that are challenging but you know you can keep.  The momentum from all the small goals you accomplish will fuel your motivation to continue after the ultimate goal.  Be patient with yourself and remember each day is a new day.

All the Love,

KC

PS. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
